Founded in 1975, NIPPON ANIMATION has been one of the largest and best-known independent animation studios in Japan. NIPPON ANIMATION has a long history of delivering successful and high quality animated series to broadcasters worldwide.

1975
Company president Koichi Motohashi established NIPPON ANIMATION in June,with its head office in Tokyo's Ginza district and studio facilities located in Tama City, Tokyo. The company's first production "Dog of Flanders"-produced for and broadcast by Fuji Television (Channel 8)-was also the first title in "The Classic Family Theater Series" (23 titles in all). The company's first international co-production was with Germany's Kirch Media Group for "Maya the Honey Bee".

1976
"Dokaben", the first production based upon a Japanese popular comic book.

1978
"Conan, the Boy in Future", the first animated TV program produced for and broadcast by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), was also the first production directed by the now-renowned Hayao Miyazaki (Naussica, Totoro, Prince Mononoke, etc).

1979
Production of "Misha" based upon the official character of Moscow Olympic Games in cooperation with the Moscow Olympic Organizing Committee.

1981
Co-production of "The Three Musketeers" based upon the story by Alexandre Dumas pere with B.R.B. INTERNATIONAL S.A. (Spain).

1982
Co-production of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" based upon the story by Lewis Carroll with Kirch Media Group (Germany).

1983
Co-production of "Around the World in 80 Days" based upon the story by Jules Verne with B.R.B. INTERNATIONAL S.A. (Spain).

1984
"Locke the Superman (Movie)", the first theatrical feature film, based upon a popular comic book by Yuki Hijiri. The film was released by Shochiku Co., Ltd. in March.

1985
NIPPON ANIMATION attended MIP-TV (in April) and MIPCOM (in October), international TV program markets held in Cannes, France, for the first time as a booth exhibitor.

1987
NIPPON ANIMATION attended NATPE, an international TV program market held in U.S.A. in January, for the first time as a booth exhibitor.

1988
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" was broadcast by HBO (Home Box Office) in U.S.A. as the first Japanese animated program acquired and telecast by the channel. Production of "Topo Gigio" based upon the popular puppet character of the same name by Maria Perego (Italy).

1989
Co-production of "The Jungle Book" based upon the story by Joseph Rudyard Kipling with Doro TV Merchandising S.r.l. (Italy). Production of "Peter Pan & Wendy" based upon stories by Sir James Barrie by arrangement with the Hospital for Sick Children in Great Ormond Street, London.

1990
In January, Fuji Television began broadcasting "Chibi Maruko Chan" based upon the comic book of the same title by Sakura Momoko. In October, "Chibi Maruko Chan" attained a TV viewer rating of 39.9%, which is still (as of October 2001) the highest rating ever attained by an animated TV series in Japan. The theme song "Odoru Ponpokorin" became the biggest hit single in more than a decade and won the Record Grand-Prix award in December. A theatrical movie of "Chibi Maruko Chan" was also produced this year, released by Toho Co., Ltd. for the 1990-1991 New Year Holidays season.

1991
A new 3-story studio facility was built at the same site in Tama city. With the newly added Camera (shooting) section, almost all the production process, from Storyboard to Editing, can now be completed under the same roof. Co-production of "Top Striker" with Fujieight Co., Ltd. (now Fuji Creative Corporation) in Japan.

1992
Co-production of "Christopher Columbus" with Doro TV Merchandising S.r.l. (Italy), commemorating the 500th anniversary of the discovery of "New World". Co-production of "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" with Fujieight Co., Ltd. (now Fuji Creative Corporation) in Japan. Establishment of NIPPON COMPUTER ARTS INC. as a joint venture with NTT Advertising, Inc., NTT Learning Systems Corporation, NTT-IT Corporation and NTT Publishing Co., Ltd. in October.

1994
Production of "Tico and Friends", the first and last title in "The Classic Family Theater Series" which was based upon an original story.

1995
Fuji Television began screening the second series of "Chibi Maruko Chan" in January.

1997
"The Dog of Flanders (Movie)", a theatrical film co-produced with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Fuji Television and Shochiku Co., Ltd. as a remake of the series "Dog of Flanders" (1975), was released by Shochiku in March.

1998
Introduction of Windows NT workstations at the studio in Tama city for digital ink and painting process.

1999
"Marco (Movie)" a theatrical film co-produced with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Shochiku Co., Ltd. as a remake of the series "From Apennines to the Andes" (1976), was released by Shochiku in April.

2000
Co-production of "Marcelino Pan y Vino" based upon the story by Sanchez Silva with VIPTOONS (Spain) and PMMP (France). Establishment of NIPPON ANIMEDIA CO., LTD. in joint investment with Agatsuma Co., Ltd. Epoch Inc. and Takara Co., Ltd. in May. Establishment of J ANIME.COM CO., LTD. as a joint venture with Fujitsu Business System Ltd. and Mitsuiwa Corporation in October.

2001
Co-production of "The legend of Condor Hero" based upon the story by Jin Ruo with JADE ANIMATION (Hong Kong) and BS Fuji (Japan).
NIPPON ANIMATION SHOP opened at Tokyo Station Shopping Mail.
